IT DOES not matter if today’s Linden Amateur Basketball Association’s (LABA) 2012 Malta Supreme Christmas Magnificent Seven basketball championship final between Amelia’s Ward Jets and Victory Valley Royals is won by the latter, since the Jets will supplant the Kashif and Shanghai Kings as the top-ranked club in Linden. At the beginning of last year, LABA made it known to its seven affiliates that for the various categories a new ratings system will be introduced and this took effect from the first tournament that was played among the senior clubs in Linden.
The winners got 10 points, runners-up seven, third-placers five, fourth received three, fifth position one point, with those who finished below fifth, doing so pointless in the new LABA ranking system.
Hence after three senior tournaments in line with the Open or Division One category system the Kashif and Shanghai Kings, after winning the first tournament sponsored by the Trophy Stall, took the top ranking as the Amelia’s Ward Jets placed second while Victory Valley Royals came third.
This tournament was followed by the LABA/BOSAI Championship which was won by the Half Mile Bulls who finished the Trophy Stall-sponsored tournament in fifth, one place above Retrieve Raiders in second place after losing the BOSAI championship final to Bulls, with Jets, Kings and Royals occupying the third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.
However, the Kings held on to the top spot in the rankings with their accumulated 13 points after two tournaments while the Jets and Bulls were joint second on 12 points while the Royals got seven.
Going into this tournament, the Kings can get only third or fourth place, as they contest the third place playoff with the Bulls and the Jets, who play the Royals in the championship, will walk away with at least seven points for a second place finish or an additional three if they win the final.
This means that the Jets will end on either 22 or 19 points, while the Kings from a win can only finish the season on 18 points or 16 with a loss, thus handing over the number one spot to the Jets.
A win by the Royals can push them past the Kings in the ratings, as they will end on 17 with a win and, that is providing the Kings lose their game and end on 16 points instead of 18 from a win today.
This makes the matches very important as all four teams are seeking to end the season with a high ranking to start the next year, as this will factor in also on any knockout tournaments during the new year.
