Veteran businessman upbeat about Guyana’s economic transformation : –disappointed at sorry state of city

CAPTAIN Gerald Gouveia of the Roraima Group of Companies noted that he is very optimistic about business during this Christmas season, which he described as “amazing” because of the several flights booked to visit several resorts in Guyana’s hinterland. At a party hosted at the Duke Lodge Restaurant & Bar in Kingston last Thursday, Captain Gouveia described business during this Christmas season as “ram jam”, with three/four tours to different places, such as the Kaieteur Falls, Mount Roraima and in the Rupununi, among other places.

He said the Roraima Group of Companies hosted a children’s party at Santa Mission, and their contribution brought cheer to the Amerindians living there. His son, Gerald Junior, played Santa Claus, and Captain Gouveia explained it was fun to see all those excited Amerindian children hugging him.

Captain Gouveia declared that making money in Guyana was good this year, but what warmed his heart and excited his spirit was to witness Guyana being transformed economically.

Captain Gouveia complemented the Guyana Police Force for “stepping up to the plate” during this holiday season. He said the police were present everywhere, and this was a good deterrent to prospective bandits. As a result, people were comfortable shopping, and had a wonderful time with family members and friends.

He reiterated that Guyana needs to keep up with the current economic momentum; and he is looking forward to the approaching Mashramani and Easter holidays to see what they have to offer.

He, however, stated that what was very depressing was the garbage that littered the city. According to him, the business community was undisciplined, dumping their garbage in the streets and drains of the city, creating a disgusting and disappointing sight. He said the Mayor and City Council can only do so much and no more, and it is unethical, unhygienic and unhealthy for the city to be kept in its present unsightly state.
