POLICE have a suspect in custody following the murder of businessman Deryck Cox, on December 22, at his Lot 71 Ramas Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara home, Commander of ‘E’ Division, Assistant Commissioner Eric Bassant said. Cox’s bullet-riddled body was discovered at the entrance to his grocery shop which is located on the lower flat of his house at about 22:50 hrs.
Police also recovered two spent shells at the scene and it is suspected that Cox was killed during a failed armed robbery while he was in the process of restocking his shelves for the festive season.
The shopkeeper was shot twice in the region of his heart by the attackers who might have been known to him.
He was picked up immediately after the shooting and was being rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) but he succumbed to his injuries before reaching the institution.
On December 9, at Annandale, also on the East Coast of Demerara, another businessman, Kamal ‘Vicky’ Ramsahoye, 38, was fatally stabbed at his home.
He, too, operated a grocery shop in the lower flat of his premises and was home alone at the time
His body was found by relatives who went there after numerous calls to him went unanswered.
Ramsahoye suffered several stab wounds to his chest and cash and jewels were missing from his ransacked home but no one has yet been arrested for the homicide as police continue to investigate. (Michel Outridge)
