Local aromatic rice introduced to market

Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy on Friday took the media on a “walk through” of the Guyana Shop at the corners of Alexander and Robb Streets, while introducing the new Guyana aromatic rice to the local market, “Bengal Aromatic Rice” just in time for the Christmas season.

altDr Ramsammy stated that the rice was developed after years of experimentation at the ministry’s rice research facility at Burma, West Coast Berbice. He explained that the rice was harvested by a farmer in Bengal Village, Corentyne who has 60 acres of land, and packaged by the Ministry of Agriculture. It takes its name from the village of cultivation.alt
“You will find on the shelves of Guyana rice called scented rice, but that’s ordinary rice where they add something, but this rice is locally grown and the aroma is a natural part of Guyana,” Dr Ramsammy disclosed.
The rice will be offered in limited quantities with an introductory price of $270. “The price offered is not just a deal, but it brings pride to our country and we have been able to deliver a good Christmas gift to Guyana,” the minister said.
The Agriculture Ministry will be introducing a competition for Guyana’s rice to be branded.
