Fifty-two year woman severely chopped by husband

A 52-year old woman, who was severely chopped by her common-law husband with an axe and a cutlass, on Sunday remained a patient at a city hospital.

Nursing gaping wounds to her head and right hand is Celena Butts of Hope-Lowlands, East Coast Demerara. Police on Sunday recovered the axe and cutlass from the scene.
Police said the perpetrator is still on the run and the hunt continues for him. Investigators were told that the couple was imbibing at home when they ended up in a disagreement.
Her husband, Stephen “Eddie Grant” Sukhram walked out of their yard calmly after committing the act and remained at large up to Sunday. Relatives said he has been calling Butts’ cellular phone since the incident.
Two days after returning from vacation in New York, Butts was attacked by Sukhram on Saturday evening in the presence of one of her daughters and a daughter-in-law. Still traumatized by the experience, her daughter declined to speak with the media.
Despite pleas by neighbours, the man unleashed the weapons on the woman in what is Guyana’s latest brutal act of domestic violence.
After the man left the scene, neighbours quickly wrapped the semi-conscious woman and rushed her to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she was admitted to the High Dependency Unit. Relatives said her condition has been improving and she was fully conscious.
Butts is the proprietor of a small shop and Sukhram is a construction worker.
This incident is the third one of a similar nature for the year in which the female victims have been either hammered or chopped in their heads. (Demerarwaves)
