THE Public Relations Division of the University of Guyana (UG) has re-launched, after an absence of five years, its ‘Santa’s Helpers’ programme for less fortunate children. A press release said it was done on Wednesday, November 28, at the Turkeyen Campus, with the help of Ms. Krest Cummings (intern), third year student of the Centre for Communication Studies.
The release, issued by UG Public Relations Officer, Ms. Paulette Paul, said: “Santa’s Helpers is intended to provide an opportunity for staffers, students and other members of the Turkeyen Campus to reach out to the community in a gesture of goodwill and help bring a smile to a disadvantaged child’s face at Christmas.”
According to the release, for this re-launch, the Department of Sociology (Social Work Section) agreed to provide a list of the names of 50 disadvantaged children for whom Christmas toys will be bought.
In addition to the toys, the Division will also be giving a small hamper of basic food items to each child at a Christmas Party for the children to be held on Friday, December 21, starting at 14:00 hrs in the Senior Common Room, Turkeyen Campus.
“Faculties/Sections and Clubs (students) and food providers on the campus are all invited to contribute cash or kind or the food hamper to the Christmas Party,” the release stated.
The programme has its genesis in 1993 when the Division collaborated with the Faculty of Natural Sciences to provide Christmas cheer for children in selected orphanages in Georgetown.
“The annual Christmas event catered for 100 children whose names, ages and gender were placed on a Santa cut-out and at the launch, staff and students were invited to select a Santa and buy an appropriate toy. The toys were later given to the children at a Christmas party hosted by the Division on the campus,” the release explained.
