WITH the aim to hit the ground hard at next month’s West Indies Cricket Board (WICB)-organised and sponsored Caribbean T20 cricket tournament, the personnel in charge of Guyana’s CT20 team held two practice matches at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday, to assess their charges. The Christopher Barnwell-led unit comprehensively defeated a Rest XI that was led by West Indies middle order batsman Assad Fudadin, thanks to some solid all-round performances from several players in the national lineup.
In the first game, the National Team batted first and scored 157 for 6 from their 20 overs, thanks to Ramnaresh Sarwan’s 39 (38 balls) which included back-to-back sixes over long-on off Dillon Heyliger and one four, and Barnwell’s pugnacious 12-ball 32 that included three fours and two sixes.
Narsingh Deonarine chipped in with 29 (1×4, 1×6; 23 balls) and Derwin Christian 26 (2×4, 1×6), with Deonarine and Sarwan adding 57 for the third wicket after their team lost Trevon Griffith (8) and Christian to be 54 for 2.
Raj Nannan took 2 for 24 to lead the Rest Team’s bowling, but when they batted, they found themselves in early trouble, losing the wicket of Robin Bacchus (8), who was brilliantly taken by a diving Leon Johnson in the solitary slip position, off a fiery Ronsford Beaton (1-30).
Shemroy Barrington posted the lone half-century of this contest from 47 deliveries, hitting two sixes (off Royston Crandon) and one four before he was bowled by Devendra Bishoo off the final delivery of the 19th over, having faced 52 deliveries for his 53, with the same number of boundaries.
Gajanand Singh made an unbeaten run-a-ball 28 with one four and a six that was struck over wide long-on off Deonarine, while Fudadin took 30 deliveries to compile his 22 with three fours, but his team showed little or no interest in chasing their target, ending on 124 for 3 at the end of their 20 overs.
If that was not bad enough, the Rest XI failed to negotiate the bowling of Bishoo, Johnson and Crandon who took two wickets each for 10, 23 and 15 runs respectively, as they crawled to 93 for 9 from their 20 overs, with only Gajanand Singh who made 33 (2×6, 1×4), Chandrapaul Hemraj 19 (1×4) and Anthony Bramble (13) being their principal scorers.
Griffith returned to contribute a healthy 55 that was scored off 41 deliveries with three sixes and two fours, reaching his 50 eight balls earlier, as the National Team raced to 95 for 4 from 14.4 overs.
However, they opted for batting practice after completing the win and using all of their 20 overs, finished on 137 for 6, as Barnwell 25 (12 balls 2×4, 1×6) and Steven Jacobs’ 20 (1×4), offered support to Griffith against the bowling of Kellon Carmichael who ended with 2 for 23.
The team will return to the same venue at 08:30hrs today where they will continue their training for the upcoming tournament. They will take on the same Rest XI – a few changes have been made – in another practice game from 14:00hrs this afternoon.
