THE Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has lamented the unfortunate circumstances that led to the death of one of its employees. GuySuCo, in a statement, has disclosed that cane harvester Ashraf Ali, 57, of the 8A Gang and of Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara, died by accident, yesterday at about 05: 30 hrs, in the vicinity of the Enmore Estate Community Centre. According to the Corporation, Mr. Ali had been engaged in cleaning cane punts at the mill dock for the past 3 months.

The statement said Ali was reportedly in the labour lorry, GGG 6514, with other cane harvesters, and whilst the lorry was reversing from the estate access road onto the road leading to the community centre, Mr. Ali disembarked from the front entrance of the lorry passenger tray, and fell under the lorry. And before the lorry could have stopped, his head was crushed in the process.

The Corporation said it regrets the unfortunate death of Mr. Asraf Ali, and extends sincere condolence to his relatives.

GuySuCo said its management met with a relative of Mr. Ali regarding any assistance that could be provided in the circumstance.
