SENIOR chess player Maria Thomas and National junior champion Anthony Drayton both returned to their home county of Demerara with the first place trophies for their respective categories following an exciting day of rapid chess at the UG Tain Campus, Berbice. The Topco-sponsored tournament, held on Sunday, December 9, attracted a total of 19 players. However, Thomas and Kriskal Persaud of Berbice were tied with an even score but Persaud defeated the lone female player and lost to Drayton.
The junior champ in turn lost his encounter with Thomas who, with a better average score than that of the Berbician, was adjudged the winner of the senior category on the tie-break. Steve Leung of New Amsterdam brought third among the seniors.
In the junior category, a large contingent of players from Demerara took over the top spots with Trenton Bennett of West Demerara Secondary placing second and Davion Mars, formerly of St Stanislaus College finishing third.
Berbician Hemchan Narain of J.C. Secondary School copped fourth and Roberto Neto of Demerara gained fifth place.
The scores of the senior players from a maximum seven points read: Maria Thomas and Kriskal Persaud – six each, Steve Leung – four, Dane Grimmond – 3½ and Romesh Narain – three.
Among the juniors the scores read: Anthony Drayton – six points, Trenton Bennett – 4½; Davion Mars, Hemchan Narain, Roberto Neto and Berkley Greene – four points each. Nine other junior players accumulated three and a half points each or less.
Demerara Distillers Ltd Berbice representative Shamal Sugrim presented the trophies, medals and cash prizes to the top performers.
