ARMED, masked intruders invaded the New Amsterdam Municipal Pound and released 27 heads of cattle that were impounded at Lot 32 Mudflat, Stanleytown, in Berbice, last Saturday. It happened during the wee hours of Saturday when the men, brandishing cutlasses, pounced on the holding pen resulting in the Constabulary Staff fleeing to safety.
The Guyana Chronicle was reliably informed that the freed animals, including two calves, had been caught by stray catchers last Thursday.
However, it was reported that the owner of three of the branded cattle and their respective calves paid the relevant fees of $10,000 each for them to be released into his custody.
The official arrangement is for the stray catcher to get half of the collected sum.
But, on Friday, the owners of the remaining cattle had a verbal confrontation with municipal staff during which several threats were issued.
It was further observed that, due to the close proximity of the pound to the Berbice River and its partial obscurity because of overgrown trees, persons unknown had ripped off its western wall.
Meanwhile, three men were arrested over the weekend and released on $10,000 station bail each, pending further investigations.
