SOME 15,000 acres of rice cultivation on Essequibo Coast, between Anna Regina and Good Hope, is growing well and blooming under the current rainy conditions. Reports said farmers have already begun to apply fertiliser to their fields and Vice-Chairman of Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr.Vishnu Samaroo said irrigation is almost complete in the Good Hope to Huis t’Dieren area.
He said fields from Riverstown to Bounty Hall are being irrigated by the Regional Drainage and Irrigation (D&I) Department while those located downstream started to benefit from irrigation on Monday.
Samaroo, who has responsibility for the D&I Department, assured that all the lands prepared for rice cultivation will be irrigated.
Planters in the North of the Coast and Cozier are making use of the heavy downpours and irrigation supplies to prepare their fields for sowing.
Region 2 produces more than one million bags of paddy per crop.
