Fire guts Nesha’s Flowerland Shop

A FIRE of unknown origin gutted Nesha’s Flowerland Shop located at the corner of Church and Carmichael street Georgetown shortly after 17:00 hrs yesterday afternoon.Fire chief, Marlon Gentle who was on scene stated that at approximately 17:13hrs, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) received a report of smoke coming from the eastern side of the building as such three fire trucks were dispatched, two from the Central Fire Service and one from the Albertown Fire Station.
He stated that when the fire service arrived there was a small amount of visible flames and lots of smoke coming from both floors of the building.
Gentle added that the strategy used was to surround the fire as early as possible to ensure that it didn’t spread to surrounding buildings and also to locate where the fire was coming from.
He indicated that after some time, there was a lot of thick smoke but not much flames and the firefighters managed to locate the area of the fire, which was from somewhere at the rear of the building which appeared to have a number of combustible materials of some sort of plastic or synthetic nature because every time firefighters applied water and tried to keep it down it flashed back, Gentle noted.
He stated that two fully protected teams were sent into the building and a part of the structure primarily had no damage but the rear of the building had a lot of damage and there are rooms that the firefighters were not able to get into.
However, the fire was put out but there was a lot of smoke and they managed to save whatever they could, Gentle reported.
Proprietor of the business, Nesha Deonauth was very reluctant to speak with the media but stated that all she got was a call stating that the building was on fire.
She added that her business has been at the same place approximately four years now and this is the third time this has happened.
She also said that she had planned to visit earlier but fell asleep and was awakened to the call about the fire.
Deonauth stated that she suffered millions in losses as the upstairs of the building is used as a storage bond.
No one was hurt or injured; however, there were two birds and a cat in the building at the time of the fire. She believes the former did not escape as they are her pets and are caged.
