A man who allegedly brandished two sharp cutlasses while confronting his neighbour at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara on Saturday, December 1, was on Friday, December 7, relieved of all charges when he appeared before Sparendaam Magistrate Alex Moore. Vassnie Barry was alleged to have verbally abused Nindranie Hopper, and was alledged to have threatened the said complainant, according to particulars of the charges; but the virtual complainant changed her story while the matter was being heard, and told the court that the defendant was merely playing around with the two cutlasses when he approached her at her gate to lodge a complaint against her 15-year-old son, who had earlier shot him with a pellet gun while he was exercising.
The magistrate thereupon discharged Barry, and ordered the complainant to pay a fine of $5,000 or face imprisonment for wasting the court’s time.
