SIX-YEAR-OLD Joshua Perreira (no address stated) underwent emergency surgery at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on Wednesday, after being struck by a Jerrick’s Funeral Parlour hearse transporting a corpse.
His mother, Vanessa Perreira, told the Guyana Chronicle that the accident occurred about 13:30hrs between Haslington and Golden Grove on the East Coast of Demerara.
She said her son suffered multiple injuries, including a wound to his back,a swollen left side of his face and forehead, a gash on his left temple and a facial abrasion.
According to her, the boy bled profusely before arriving at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department of the GPH, where the driver of the hearse paid a taxi to take him.
She also reported that the police instructed the man who was at the wheel of the hearse to return to the station after he had discharged the body he was carrying.
Meanwhile, Joshua remains a patient in a stable condition in the Paediatric Ward of the GPH where he is, reportedly, suffering from polytrauma.
Eyewitnesses to the mishap said he had been in company with other schoolchildren playing on the road before he was hit by the speeding hearse.
