OPPOSITION politicians’ favourite political charge is that all the problems their supporters face in Guyana are based on marginalisation of one race by another.
They support this argument with two specific examples, namely, that almost all top government ministers and officials are of one race as well as those people who seem to have the biggest houses and most money.
Those who complain about the ethnicity of many government officials, need to remember parties usually appoint party supporters to jobs, and if they are racially based so is the race of the appointees, until better multi-racial parties exist. It would be interesting to see what will change if more Afro-Guyanese joined the PPP/C and become part of the leadership, how both ethnic groups would react. What is totally ignored as if somehow inconsequential is the large number of civil servants that may or may not be among the opposition supporters. Many of the civil servants hold key and decision-making positions in the government and who hopefully can prevent or speak out against any form of bias or actions that result in unequal treatment.
Wealth is best created by education and motivation in commerce and services, not usually working for government or in other people’s businesses. The Public Service may provide a steady income and some status, but it is the self- employed and entrepreneurs in agriculture and commerce who are primarily building the big houses and acquiring the wealth that escapes so many among all races and not their political affiliation or race. Young people need to be given the knowledge and assistance to find careers in the agriculture, aqua culture, technical trades and the many related fields that exist and provide wealth- creating opportunities and gainful employment. Time to learn how to compete with those we complain about.
