CHAIRMAN of the Shea Village Council in Region 9 (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo), Toshao Julie Mack has disclosed plans for an eco-tourism project in which government’s intervention is being sought.
Speaking about it, last Sunday, during a visit there by Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Ms. Pauline Sukhai, Mack said the venture is presently awaiting materials other than what were seen at the site.
The location is Shea Rock which is over 400 feet high where villagers climb to hike and view the surrounding savannahs and host parties and picnics.
Mack said the Council will be constructing a benab to attract more tourist and develop tourism.
But Sukhai remarked that sports facility assistance, health, education and other matters are issues for the South Rupununi Council.
The minister and party had earlier undertaken a five-hour journey, through the savannahs of the Deep South Rupununi, for the handing over of a brand new tractor, trailer and plough to the Shea Village Council.
With Sukhai were officers of the Community Development Agency of her ministry and media representatives, who also heard the residents seeking help in the areas of sports and culture, to have their playground fenced, as Shea will be hosting the Amerindian Village Games in South Rupununi next August.
Assistance was also requested for infant and child care drugs and transportation of the medication to the village.
School uniform distribution and classroom teachers shortage were among the other issues raised with the minister.
In her response, Sukhai spoke about the development activities and emphasised the use and management of agricultural equipment donated.
She remarked that other villages had failed to care similar donations and cannot undertake any developmental works and transportation.
