Embezzlement defendant denies taking sum charged

CLEMENT Tobin (no address given) has been charged with embezzlement.

He appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday and pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, last October 15, being entrusted with $6,400 by Samwattie Samwaroo to purchase an umbrella, he fraudulently converted the money to his own use and benefit.
Police Corporal Vinetta Pindar, prosecuting, said the defendant absconded with the money after the virtual complainant gave him to buy the umbrella.
Tobin admitted receiving the cash for the purpose but claimed he did not get the umbrella and returned $5,400 and told Samwaroo he took $1,000.
He said, however, that the woman threw the money on the ground and declared she wanted back all that she gave him.
Tobin said he is willing to repay the $1,000 because that is what he took.
He was released on his own recognisance to return to court on December 19.
