MINISTER of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy has said his Ministry is currently reviewing its options with regards to building a modern state-of-the-art abattoir as promised earlier this year.

altIn a recent interview he said: “We want to build a modern abattoir. The cost of this abattoir keeps escalating every time we talk about it.”
Dr Ramsammy disclosed that presently there is an ongoing review at the Agriculture Ministry, in terms of establishing a stand alone abattoir.
However, he advised that other choices which can be undertaken are also being considered in order to reduce cost, while still achieving a more modern facility.
The present abattoir is in Water Street, Georgetown.
“There is a new proposal that has come forward, that we should, in fact, look at the old abattoir and try to modernise it to try to reduce the cost. So that is something we’re looking at,” the minister said.
Earlier this year, Ramsammy had announced that the ministry is planning to establish a state-of-the-art, international standard abattoir which he had said would cost some $3M.
When that announcement was made, he had pointed out that, if Guyana is to progress successfully in the expansion of its poultry and livestock exportation, a well established slaughter house is necessary.
He had also mentioned that Guyana has a plus in acquiring markets readily, since the country is certified as free of ‘Foot and Mouth’ disease.
