PRIME Minister Samuel Hinds said that a re-assessment is set to commence shortly of contractors who did not perform as expected on the Amaila Falls road.
Earlier this year, Government terminated the initial contract it had with Synergy Holdings after it failed to honour the terms of a completion agreement. Subsequently, the project was broken up into lots and re-tendered. Toolsie Persaud Quarries Inc., was awarded the contract to build the Kurupukari junction and it also holds the contract for ‘section four’, while ‘section five’ has been allocated to Ivor Allen.
The Amaila Falls Hydropower project is being vigorously pursued by the Government on the basis that it would significantly reduce Guyana’s US$350M fuel import bill and minimise the impact of fuel price movement on the cost of generating power. The development of renewable energy sources is needed to increase energy security and maintain macro-economic stability.
The project which has the capacity to provide over 140 megawatts of electricity is to be located along the Kuribrong River in Potaro, Region Eight.
In September, the Engineering, Procurement and Construction agreement (EPC) valued at US$506M in Xian, China was signed by Bruce Wrobel, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sithe Global, and Dr. Sun Yonggang, Chairman of China Railway First Group (CRFG), for the construction of the Amaila Falls Hydro project and Transmission Line.
Construction is expected to start in mid-2013. (GINA)
