CONGRATULATIONS are in order for our former President,Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, as he is about to receive another doctorate, this time from the University Of Central Lancashire, United Kingdom. Once again this doctorate brings to Dr. Jagdeo and our beloved Guyana, great prestige and honour. This writer is extremely happy and wish there was an opportunity to celebrate this great achievement with our former President.
Here is a hero of our country who is being honoured and decorated by a most prestigious international university in the world, but local elements wish to destroy the great man and malign his name; whose legacy some opposition politicians wish to destroy, and one that a certain dangerous columnist describes as a failure, when that columnist needs to instead look in the mirror every morning and see the preponderance of failure staring him. Of course, this simpleton thinks he deserve the awards because he always fights any government of the day, even recently announcing that he will not support his former AFC heroes, as they do not take his orders or words to the effect.
In addition to this award from the United Kingdom, which all Guyanese regardless of political affiliation should celebrate, the honourable, simple, yet great Dr. Jagdeo has been awarded doctorates from: Patrice Lumumba Peoples’ Friendship University in Moscow. He also received a honourary doctorate from DY Patil University of India, and Teri University of India, all for his low carbon master strategy plan for developing countries, and his wisdom to educate the world and focus the attention of mankind on preserving the environment for future generations.
Are there other presidents in the world, or Heads of State which received such international awards and doctorates? I will be happy if anyone can list them.
In an article yesterday in one national newspaper, (Chronicle pg 9, Fr Nov 30th), it says in the headline: Colombia look to Guyana for Support in REDD+, so many developing countries have been doing the same. Hello Guyanese, open your eyes and see.
Why are some Guyanese not proud that a son of Guyana, and our former President, is maybe the only Head of State in the world who was awarded such titles? It would make the opposition parties look mature and likeable if they could recognise this, and celebrate with Dr. Jagdeo, instead of making ludicrous remarks. By acting amateurishly, they could lose respect and support of some who are wise, even some who may support them in many things. Those who left President Jagdeo’s party are likely to return, as a result.
Obviously, some would be jealous of such a man and such awards.
In addition to the honorary doctorates, he received these awards and appointments: Chairman of the Board of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank; The World Economic Forum recognised him as a Young Global Leader in 2006, and Time Magazine recognised him as one the Heroes of the Environment in 2008, and in 2010 came a most prestigious award by the United Nations as The Champion of the Earth. Of all the leaders in the world, only he has received this award, and as a hero, he donated his prize money to the development of the Amerindian Peoples (aborigines of Guyana). Wow!! What a leader. That is not all:
1. In 2010, the Secretary-General of the United Nations asked him to serve on the Secretary- General’s High Level Advisory on Climate Finance. Then he is a Patron of the New Delhi based World Sustainable Development Forum. But there is more.
2. He was asked to be Roving ambassador for the Three Basins by the heads of State of the Rainforest Countries.
3. He has been a guest lecturer at Columbia University ( New York ); York University ( Canada); Trent University ( Canada ); The University of Toronto; United Nations University ( Tokyo , Japan ); and the University of the West Indies.
And so much more that space will not permit to be mentioned.
After the Champion of the Earth award, I wrote a letter in the press, and predicted that President Jagdeo would be appointed by a famous international body, maybe the UN, and he has, and the accolades will continue to pour in.
The behaviour and attitudes of certain political elements make them look obnoxious, as I recall when the peoples of the country wanted to celebrate the former President’s terms, and bid him a mighty farewell, so many tried to sabotage it, and disagree with it. The will of the people speaks.
As a people we must learn to give a man his rightful due. This great son must be recognised and honoured by all Guyanese, as the hero he is. I recall an old calypso.
Was it the Mighty Sparrow, who sang the old famous tune: Where are your heroes Caribbean?
May this President be ever successful, and be ever blessed, as he continues to bring more pride and joy to Guyana and its peoples, and indeed to the Caribbean.
