GDF recovers body of young soldier from Pomeroon River : –Board of Inquiry to investigate incident

A search party formed by members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) recovered the body of 22-year-old Private Darwin Simon from the murky waters of the Pomeroon River  around 11am yesterday morning, and the body was expected in the city for a post- mortem scheduled for today. An army release on Monday said that Simon,  of Lot 47 Norton Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, was feared drowned after he had reportedly fallen into the Atlantic Ocean near the estuary of the Pomeroon River in the very early hours of Sunday morning.

He had been in the army for two years, and had been stationed at the GDF’s Floating Base in the Pomeroon River since early November.

The release said Simon and two other ranks had just finished mooring their boat alongside the Floating Base at midnight on Sunday when he reportedly fell into the river, and efforts to save him proved futile.

A Board of Inquiry has been established to look into the incident.
