Yard fowl season in Parliament

It’s yard fowl season and these birds of passage are having a field day in parliament, so says Raphael Trotman. Last parliament was a continuation of this mindless display and the speaker was complicit in this kind of behaviour. In the midst of the Minister of Home Affairs’s presentation, one of his yard fowl comrades could jump up and stop the proceedings, and the speaker promptly entertained his request. If this is not “yard fowlism” then can someone enlighten me? To think that in the highest forum of the land an opposition member can command such stupidly and he is given an audience tells me much of what parliament has degenerated into. That item was not on the order paper but it could have been urgently discussed and resulted in a so-called decision to refer the matter to a privilege committee for consideration.
This is a total disregard for parliamentary rules and an assault on the constitution of this country. To top it off the speaker, who is a lawyer, should know that he has broken the law and should have vacated the speaker’s chair forthwith. But lest I hasten to ask for his head, because that is what he said in appeal “I am willing to resign.” Resign! that would be the last thing on his mind. Making that outburst was just a token gesture, because Trotman knows fully well that he would never resign from his post; he is soaking up every minute of their 15 minutes of infamy.
But yet again the question comes up for consideration: Why was the minister denied his constitutional right to present his bill? The answer comes back, because the opposition says so. Here the minister has to be subjected to the whims and fancies of an opposition, which is tantamount to us having a Kangaroo Parliament. Fantastic! Firstly, a joker for a speaker for allowing it and an opposition collective who are wasting taxpayers’ money each time parliament is called.
This is not going down well, even in the business community where the ripple effects of the foolishness is being severely felt. They have already signalled their disgust at these spineless antics that lead to nowhere.
But the masquerade continues unabated. The truth of this whole charade is that the opposition, speaker included, do not like Minister Rohee and they would like to see him go and they are trying the most degrading means possible to get him to resign.
They tried to bring him in guilty in the Linden Commission of Inquiry when they accused him of giving the order to shoot the so-called innocent protesters. This was found to be a blatant lie. Even the assumption that the police were the ones who shot the protesters was also proven a falsity by the expert witness of Dr Mark Robinson. This infuriated them because they were brought to shame in what they thought was an airtight case.
So their next strategy is to remove him in the most unjustified method possible, silence him. But wait a second! The minister is not guilty on any count, yet he is the one that is punished. In fact, my knowledge of the law is that a man is presumed innocent until he is proven guilty; but here we have the reverse, with Mr Rohee being pronounced guilty despite all the evidence proving otherwise. What a travesty of justice. Further to this episode, the minister is gagged even before the so-called committee has met.
My knowledge of the law is that someone must continue in what they were doing until evidence to the contrary is proven.
The real truth behind all of this is that the opposition is terrified of this bill because, in essence, it will bring in many of those illegal firearms and the people that operate them. It will also put an end to the questionable decisions some magistrates and judges make when dealing with possession and use of illegal firearms.
As we speak, another deadly armed robbery is taking place by one of the so-called freedom fighters. It is alleged that APNU and the poodle AFC fully well know where all those guns come from and to muzzle them means that Guyana will become too tranquil a place, something they do not want to see.
The more Guyana is chaotic the better for them. They would have ample time to castigate the government for doing nothing. So the minister is duty bound to bring law and order back to society and for this he is denied the privilege. This is what the combined opposition is hiding from the public.
