THE Women’s Progressive Organisation successfully hosted its 16th Triennial Congress on November 24 and 25, 2012 at the Diamond Secondary School, East Bank Demerara. The congress was hosted under the theme, “Strengthening the WPO to further advance the development of Guyanese women.”

At the conclusion of the formal sessions of the 16th Triennial Congress of the WPO, the newly elected Central Committee met where a decision was taken to elect its President and General Secretary.
As a result, the General Secretary of WPO for the past 30 years, Mrs. Indranie Chandarpal, was elected President of the organisation. This position was held by the late founding leader of the WPO, Mrs. Janet Jagan until her death in 2009.
Deputy General Secretary of WPO, Mrs. Sheila Veerasammy was elected as the new General Secretary.
Mrs. Veerasammy joined the WPO in 1979 and became a Central Committee member in 1999 and Organising Secretary in 2000.
