Taxi-driver murdered while going after bandits …his last words were ‘kiss my daughter & fiancée and tell them I love them : …two in custody after suspect caught hiding at sister’s home

THIRTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD Omar Harper, of 881 Third Street Cummings Lodge, was on Saturday night murdered by a bandit who stabbed him to the abdomen.
The assailant had earlier robbed a young woman as she was making her way home sometime around 18.30hrs that night. altOn his way the Georgetown Public Hospital, Harper reportedly asked the taxi driver who was transporting him there to kiss his daughter and fiancé goodbye and let them know that he loves them. The man’s mother told this publication that her son planned to get married in January of next year.
She said her son’s daughter and mother live in the United States, and they all were going to be in Guyana early next year for the wedding.
The Guyana Chronicle was informed that Omar, who worked at the Trooper taxi Service as a driver was washing his car on his bridge when he heard a young lady he knew calling for help.
She told him that she had just been robbed by two men on a bicycle.
She related that the now dead taxi-driver jumped into his car and followed the robbers who made a dash through one of the streets.
The robbers then decided to use a bridge too small for the car to follow, and Harper rushed from his vehicle and chased them on foot.
 It was at that point that one of the bandits whipped out a knife and stabbed the taxi-driver. He was rushed to the hospital by another driver, and died while being attended to at the institution.

altMeanwhile the Chronicle was informed that when the bandits approached the young lady, they were not aware that their victim was known to one of them. She told the Chronicle that when the men approached her, she threw her mobile phone away and one of the bandits went after it, while the other advanced to her.
When he realized that she knew him, he jumped on the cycle with his accomplice and rode away.

altYesterday the Harper’s brother said that after his brother was stabbed, the woman pointed the police to where the suspect who stabbed Harper was living. When they did not find him there, they travelled to his sister’s home where he was found hiding. His name was given as Rakesh.
It was reported that when the police swooped down at the man’s sister home at 921 Area “Y” First Street Cummings Lodge on Saturday evening, his sister refused to open the door. But then a few minutes later the door was opened and the police took both the suspect and his sister into custody.
The family friend said that the man who is now in custody for the murder of the taxi-driver lives with his mother who was described as an alcoholic, and who does not pay much attention to him and his interests. The man is said to be in his 20’s.
