STEFFON James comfortably shattered the decade-long 200m Boys Under-20 record yesterday, the penultimate day of the GTU/MOE Digicel-sponsored 52nd National Schools Swimming, Cycling and Track and Field Championship, at the National Stadium. James ran a blistering time of 21.7s eclipsing the previous record of 22.0s which was set by former National sprinter Keith Roberts. He beat Rennick Burretl into second place with a time of 22.4s while Selwin Foster was third with 22.8s.
Tiffany Carto avenged her loss to Ebony Nelson in the 100m she suffered on Wednesday when she steamed to gold in the Girls 200m clocking a time of 25.3s ahead of Nelson, who ran 25.8s while Shomaine Daniels finished third in a time of 26.8s.
Also running a good time was Samuel Doris who won the Under-18 Boys 200m in a time of 22.5s ahead of Kevin Abbensetts (22.7s) and Tyrell Cummings (22.8s.)
Jason Yaw ran a time of 22.6s in the Boys Under-16 200m which made a stamp in the record books while Teranie Mitchell’s time of 25.6s also made it into the record books in the Girls Under-18 200m.
Earlier in the day, two-time Carifta Gold medallist Jevina Straker copped her third goal when she cruised to victory in the Girls Under-20 1500m in a time of 5:12.2s ahead of Viola Edwards who took 5:50.0s and Amanda Jones.
Devaun Barrington got another taste of gold yesterday with a satisfying win over his rivals Nathaniel Giddings and Samuel Kaiton. Barrington won the Under-20 Boys 1500m in a time of 4:22.8s ahead of Giddings (4:26.0s) and Kaiton (4:29.0s)
The Boys Under-18 1500m had Orresta Thomas winning in a time of 4:24.8s while Grimon Gant (4:26.7s) and Denzil Leitch (4:35.3s) were second and third, respectively.
In the cycling aspect of the championships National Junior cyclist Raynauth Jeffrey comfortably stormed to victory in the 3000m Boys Under-20 ahead of Jeban Crawford and Kurt La Rose. Another entertaining cycling race was the Boys Under-16 3 000m which Raul Leal won ahead of Adriel Ross and Jornel Yearwood.
Earlier in the day the high jump and javelin field events were run off. Up to press time last evening Chronicle Sport was unable to ascertain which of the 16 Districts was in the lead.
