THE Roraima Group of Companies yesterday handed over eight garbage receptacles to the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), in the compound of City Hall, in the presence of Georgetown Mayor, Hamilton Greene, Deputy Mayor, Patricia Chase-Greene, and M&CC Public Relations Officer, Royston King, along with various employees of Roraima.
Marketing Manager of Roraima Airways, Shamaine Davis, said the company is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and has undertaken a number of activities as a part of its mandate to make Guyana a better place.
She said that handing over of the receptacles is one activity to mark the company’s anniversary. She revealed that the cost of each bin is approximately $6,000; hence the total would be an average of $48,000.
Davis explained that Roraima was prompted to donate the bins as the company’s focus is to help make the country a more pleasant place, and providing containers to properly dispose of garbage is something considered very beneficial to the beautification of the country.
She added that garbage bins have also been donated to the community of Santa Mission (a small Amerindian village on the banks of the Pokerero Creek in Region 3), and there are other donations to be made to Santa Mission in an effort to beautify and benefit that community.
Responding to the company’s gesture, Mayor Green thanked and lauded the Roraima Group for its work, over the years, to make Guyana a more beautiful place. He added that he has great respect for the Managing Director of the Roraima Group of Companies, Captain Gerry Gouveia.
Greene said he considered the donation a very significant one, and encouraged other entities to take note and follow suit.
The Mayor and the Deputy Mayor both revealed that the Ministry of Tourism had approached the M&CC with a proposal for a project to provide bins along South Road, Georgetown, and Mayor Green said he is hoping to have more entities donate receptacles to help this initiative.
Deputy Mayor, Ms Chase-Greene also thanked the John Fernandes Group of Companies for its donation of approximately 200 garbage bins throughout the year. She noted that those containers have been dispersed across the city, and are being put into good use.
