Hire car passenger refused bail in High Court

TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD Alana Angel known as Lana made an unsuccessful bid to secure bail at the Berbice High Court yesterday.

Justice Roxanne George ruled that her application has no merit at this stage as the trial had commenced in the lower court.
The applicant’s mother, Marcia Marshal, who petitioned the judge said, in an affidavit, that, on October 5 last, her daughter was in a private motor car travelling from Georgetown to Number 53 Village, Corentyne, when the vehicle was stopped, at Palmyra, East Canje, by police who carried out a search.
Angel was taken to Central Police Station where charges of narcotic possession and trafficking were laid against her.
The defendant, of Lot 39 Arapina Street, Guyhoc Park, Georgetown, is alleged to have trafficked 458 grammes of cocaine on October 5, whilst at Palmyra Village, East Canje. Additionally, she, allegedly had half a gramme of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in her possession.
Police said the defendant was a passenger in a car plying the Georgetown to New Amsterdam route when it was stopped a short distance East of the Berbice River bridge and the passengers, along with their possessions, were subsequently searched and the illegal substance was unearthed in the defendant’s bag.
Angel was represented by attorney-at-law, Mr. James Bond.
