TWO men, charged separately with being in possession of improvised metal and glass pipes, respectively, used for smoking cocaine, shared different fates on Monday.
That was despite claims of being assaulted by ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, in the New Amsterdam, Berbice Court, on Monday.
One of them, Aubrey Williams, who displayed healed wounds about his body, stated that the injuries were inflicted by the police but, after being told that a record has been made on the committal order for him to be medically examined, he confessed to having the glass pipe in his possession whilst walking along Bath Settlement Public Road.
He was contacted by police, who, after carrying out a search found two glass tubes, suspected to be used for smoking cocaine, were found in his right side pants pocket.
Additionally, after imposing a one year jail sentence on him, the magistrate requested that Police Prosecutor Corporal Orin Joseph inform the Divisional Commander of the allegation in order that an investigation can be launched.
However, the other defendant, Edward David, having, earlier, confessed to the offence, had a not guilty plea entered by the magistrate after he explained his version of the incident.
Displaying injuries to his elbow, the defendant claimed that he had asked the arresting rank to show him his hands, prior to him inserting same in his pocket but the policeman refused to do so.
He said: “Your Worship, I am employed at a lemonade factory, as a labourer. I live with my aunt at Number 10 Village. I do not smoke cocaine.”
David was granted $25,000 bail and is expected to attend the Blairmont Magistrate Court on November 26 for report and fixture.
