Defendant remanded on Banks DIH cables larceny charge

A MAN was remanded to prison yesterday on a charge of stealing cables worth $1.3M belonging to Banks DIH Ltd.

Rudy Kellawan, of Lot 61 Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said it was committed between October 18 and 19.
The defendant told the court he knows nothing about the charge against him but worked with Banks DIH for four weeks without any payment.
He claimed he was walking on the road when the police suddenly arrested him for something he has no knowledge about.
Police Corporal Kerry Bostwick, prosecuting, objected to bail and informed the court that the defendant’s address differs from what he gave police.
He said on the day in question a public-spirited citizen saw the defendant stripping and burning cables and alerted a security guard stationed at Banks DIH.
The prosecutor said, when the security guard confronted the defendant, he ran away and was only recently apprehended by police, based on the information that was relayed to them.
Kellawan has to be back in court on November 30.
