Fiery Best delivers win for Windies

DHAKA, Bangladesh (CMC) – Fast bowler Tino Best snatched his first-ever five-wicket innings haul in Tests to propel West Indies to a 77-run victory over Bangladesh on the final day of the first Test here yesterday. Set 245 to win, Bangladesh collapsed for a disappointing 167 with the right-armer Best finishing with five for 24.
Mahmudullah top-scored with 29, Naeem Islam got 26 and Shahriar Nafees, 23, but Bangladesh were never really in the hunt as West Indies took a 1-0 lead heading into the second and final Test starting Wednesday.
Earlier, West Indies were dismissed for 273 inside the first hour of the morning, after resuming the day at the Shere Bangla Stadium on 244 for six .
Sohag Gazi, playing in his debut Test, claimed six for 74 as he ensured a swift end to the Windies innings with the last four wickets falling for the addition of just 29 runs.
Captain Darren Sammy added just one to his overnight 15 before departing in the day’s second over, and it was left up to Sunil Narine to blast two fours and a six in a busy unbeaten 22 off 29 balls, and get the Windies precious runs at the end.
Scenting a rare victory, Bangladesh suffered two major blows in the period before lunch, as they stumbled to 45 for two.
Shotgun opener Tamim Iqbal made just five before he slashed at a short ball from pacer Ravi Rampaul (2-32) in the fifth over and edged a catch to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin at ten for one.
Shahriar Nafees (23) and Junaid Siddique (20) then raised the Tigers hopes, putting on 34 for the second wicket before opener Siddique fell in the penultimate over before the break, also caught behind attempting to run a length delivery from Best to third man.
The slide continued after the interval when Shahriar Nafees tried to pull the final delivery of the third over but only succeeded in top-edging an easy return catch for Best at 51 for three.
With his tail up, Best produced perhaps the best delivery of his spell in his next over, squaring Shakib Al Hasan up with one that moved away, to remove the left-hander for two with just four runs added.
Naeem Islam, the first innings century-maker, and captain Mushfiqur Rahim then held up the West Indies march to victory with a 30-run stand for the fifth wicket.
Both batsmen played carefully, picking off the boundaries when they came, and were settling in nicely before Best struck again, trapping Mushfiqur in front for 16 as the right-hander pushed forward tentatively
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (3-32) accounted for Naeem Islam via the lbw route at 106 and Nasir Hossain failed to repeat his first innings heroics when he played back to Permaul and was bowled for 21.
Floundering at 129 for seven at tea, Bangladesh’s tail wagged briefly before finally succumbing in the final hour of the day.
Sohag Gazi slammed two fours and a six in 19 and added 36 for the eighth wicket with Mahmudullah, before skying a catch to substitute Narsingh Deonarine at mid-off to give Permaul his third wicket.
The end came quickly for Bangladesh as Shahadat Hossain (4) fended Rampaul to Kieran Powell at forward short leg-before Best fittingly claimed the final wicket of the innings when he clean bowled Mahmudullah.
