ADDING to the Sonia Noel realm of possibilities comes a magazine that promotes cultural inclusiveness and fosters strategic and developmental growth, especially in the entertainment and arts sectors.
‘Making Style’, as the magazine is dubbed, harnesses the very being of Caribbean couture, exploring the rich artistic diversity that makes Guyanese a Caribbean people.
The magazine ultimately targets the ever-expanding Guyanese diaspora, keeping them in touch with their homeland and the current issues and events that shape the present realities.
‘Making Style’ promises to be more than a periodical publication with feature stories. This is a magazine with an edge, revealing interesting truths, and catering to investigative minds which treat simple Caribbean realities with a refreshing honesty and a celebratory spirit.
According to fashion icon Sonia Noel, ‘Making Style’ is a feel-good read, which makes one feel great about being Caribbean. Noel noted that, in many ways, this new project serves to justify why we create distinctive alternative styles, act independently, adapt innovatively, ascribe imaginatively, animate ingeniously, accumulate inventively, and accentuate invigoratively.
Commenting on the choice of name for this new magazine, Noel noted that the verb ‘to make’ connotes an ongoing action (determining) and also claims a role of stewardship. She said that while the magazine is not only following fashion, it’s also about shaping a new aesthetic, for it is forever absorbing, assimilating and ascertaining.
In acknowledgement of this Creole/parlance/ vernacular/folk expression, ‘Making Style’, Noel related that her group is signalling the advent of a vanguard alternative to global trends.
She calls on all Guyana to share in this new-world presence, this paradise perspective, this magazine reformation.
‘Making Style’ is about living the Caribbean life through the eyes of our trendsetters, our visionaries, our movers and shakers. The magazine tells the vivid story of Sonia Noel’s extraordinary branding in a most moving and compelling, full colour, glossy, must-read quarterly production, chocked full of irresistible ad campaigns, clever merchandizing layouts, and engaging advertorials.
The magazine’s distribution plan is all-inclusive and widespread, and its extensive marketing reach is facilitated through unique positioning, not only in the region, but throughout the diaspora.
The cast of editors and contributors consist of many prominent subject-matter experts, both regionally and in the diaspora. These include Sherry-Ann Dixon, an international journalist from Guyana living in London; Chester Francis, a reporter for The Gleaner newspaper in Jamaica; Laura Dowridge-Phillips, editor of the Guardian Media Limited in Trinidad; Philippa Morish, president of Etiquette International, a Guyanese living in New York City; and Donn Thompson, an international photographer who has done shoots for magazines such as GQ, Interview, The Journal, and many others.
Other contributors include Kirk Cambridge-Delpeshe, beauty editor and former contributor to numerous magazines; Steven Seedo, contributor to De Ware Tijd in Suriname; and Richard Young, one of the most celebrated and recognized creative directors in the Caribbean.
They are joined by a powerful public relations and marketing team: Ronnie Morris, CEO of the Barbados Music Awards, and John Quelch and Sade Richardson, both of Sonia Noel’s Designs.
The first release of ‘Making Style’ is scheduled for January 2013. There will be free regional distribution and circulation. Noel adds: “The Magazine comes at a time when there is much need for an all-inclusive publication.” She added that the plan is to ensure wide coverage of every aspect of our folk, scenic beauty and culture.
This new magazine marks another chapter in Sonia’s celebration of her 15 years in fashion.
