Stage set for 2012 National Senior Chess Championship

THE stage is set for the 2012 National Senior Chess Championship which involves seven top senior challengers vying for the title that is held by defending champion Taffin Khan.

The championship was launched under the Dr Chase brand, a product line distributed by Geddes Grant Ltd, a member of the Neal & Massy Group, on Monday in the presence of the players at Geddes Grant Ltd, Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Ocean Spray Hotel will host the tournament which starts on November 17. The seven challengers who will face one another and the reigning National Champion in the seven-round single round-robin event are: Loris Nathoo, Glenford Corlette, former national champion and Berbician Kriskal Persaud, lone female player Maria Thomas, Shiv Nandalall and Craig Sylvester.
Each player will be allowed 90 minutes per game plus 30 seconds increment from the first move.
Mahesh Itwaru, Pharmacist and Products Specialist of Geddes Grant expressed his delight during the launch at being able to sponsor this year’s event. “We want to be able to help the game of Chess continue to be part of our main events in Guyana,” he said.
The company representative highlighted the benefits of the Dr Chase products in assisting players to maintain their concentration during the upcoming tournament.
Vishnu Rampersaud, secretary of the Guyana Chess Federation, expressed gratitude to the sponsor on behalf of the local body while accepting the cheque for sponsorship of the tournament.
