NEWLY appointed Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Guyana, Ivan Jancarek, presented his letters of Credence to President Donald Ramotar Monday and spoke of the task of strengthening commercial and economic relations with Guyana.
In the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, and Director General in the Ministry, Elisabeth Harper, the new Ambassador told the President of his government’s willingness to receive more goods from Guyana, and pointed out that there has been a notable decline in this regard.
The offer found favour with President Ramotar who said it accords with the Guyana Government’s policy of encouraging greater trade and investment.
The Czech Republic is also ready to offer Guyanese the opportunity to pursue studies there, either on a government or commercial basis, Ambassador Jancarek said.
“Strengthening ties between young people is the best investment for our future cooperation,” Ambassador Jancarek said.
Relations between the two countries were first established on January 1, 1993, and have been of personal interest to President Ramotar who resided in the Czech Republic for some time and whose youngest son is a Czech citizen by birth.
He told the ambassador of the Guyana Government’s willingness to work towards advancing the aforementioned objectives, as well as others that will provide opportunities for economic and social development and the strengthening of relations between the countries.
At the multilateral level, the two countries’ relations have been mutual. Guyana supported the candidature of the Czech Republic to the International Criminal Court for the period 2012 to 2020, and Ambassador Jancarek praised Guyana for its patronage.
