Cultural interactions could benefit us all –Minister Frank Anthony

THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport held a cultural ceremony Monday at its head office on Main Street, Georgetown, in celebration of Diwali.

altThe ceremony began with a havan yagna (prayer) by the Cove and John Ashram, Diwali songs, and a Diwali message delivered by Robert Ramsaran of the Cove and John Ashram, who spoke on the significance of Diwali.
There followed a dance performance by Indira Etwaru, after which Culture Minister, Dr Frank Anthony delivered feature remarks.
Dr Anthony said it was declared that a function would be held at the ministry on every national holiday, so that people could better understand the holidays.
He said that as a multi-ethnic society, Guyanese share each other’s holidays, regardless of race, as part of Guyana’s unique and very enriching heritage.alt
As a nation, Dr Anthony said, cultural interactions can benefit us all. He pointed out that, in the Hindu calendar, Diwali is an auspicious occasion. The meaning of the word is “a row of lighted diyas”, and this, he said, symbolizes good over evil.
He urged Guyanese to note the significance of Diwali and be able to overcome challenges in their lives, instead of being daunted by them.
Dr Anthony then wished all Guyanese a “Shubh Diwali”.
