Sri Lanka win series after washout

HAMBANTOTTA: Sri Lanka won the five-match ODI series against New Zealand 3-0, after the final ODI was washed out because of rain at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium here yesterday.

New Zealand had a good chance of winning the game after they had reduced the hosts to 123-8, after their skipper Ross Taylor won the toss and elected to field.
Opener Upul Tharanga (60) tried to lead from the front, as wickets fell at constant intervals, with Kiwi medium-pacer Tim Southee ruling the roos with a haul of 3-18.
When he fell after edging the ball to keeper Watling off Southee, the rain came down heavily, and the umpires decided to bring the covers on.
The elements showed no signs of relenting, and the match was eventually called off. Sri Lanka had won three games riding on the Duckworth/Lewis method to win the series. Bradley-John Watling was declared the Man-of-the-Series.
