Covering the disapora… Sonia Noel publishing new quarterly magazine from January

SONIA Noel plans to launch a magazine that promotes cultural inclusiveness and fosters strategic and developmental growth, especially in the entertainment and arts sectors.

alt‘Making Style’, as it is to be named, will harness the very being of Caribbean couture, exploring the rich artistic diversity that makes its people, she told the Guyana Chronicle.
Noel said the publication will, ultimately, target the ever expanding diaspora, keeping them in touch with their homeland and the current issues and events that shape the present.
‘Making Style’ promises to be more than a periodical with feature stories. It will have an edge, revealing interesting truths and catering to investigative minds, which treat simple Caribbean realities with a refreshing honesty and a celebratory spirit, she offered.
The fashion icon said the magazine will be “a feel good read, which makes you feel great about being Caribbean.”
She said: “This new project will serve to justify that, in many ways, we create distinctive alternative styles, act independently, adapt innovatively, ascribe imaginatively, animate ingeniously, accumulate inventively and accentuate invigoratively.”
It marks another chapter in Noel’s celebration of her 15 years in fashion.
Reflecting on the choice of name for the new magazine, Noel remarked the verb ‘to make’ connotes an ongoing determination and also claims a role of stewardship.
New aesthetic
She declared that, while it is not only following fashion, it is also about shaping a new aesthetic, for it will be forever absorbing, assimilating and ascertaining.
In acknowledgement of this creole/parlance/ vernacular/folk expression ‘Making Style’, Noel said her group is signalling the advent of a vanguard alternative to global trends. She called on all Guyana to share in this new world presence, this paradise perspective, this magazine reformation.
‘Making Style’ is about living the Caribbean life through the eyes of our trendsetters, our visionaries, our movers and shakers. The magazine will tell the vivid story of Sonia Noel’s extraordinary branding in a most moving and compelling full colour glossy must read quarterly production, chock full of irresistible ad campaigns, clever merchandising layouts and engaging advertorials.
Their distribution plan is all inclusive and widespread and their extensive marketing reach is facilitated through their unique positioning not only in the region but throughout the diaspora.
The editors and contributors consist of many prominent subject matter experts, both here in the region and in the diaspora. These include Sherry-Ann Dixon, an international journalist from Guyana living in London; Chester Francis, a reporter for The Gleaner newspaper in Jamaica; Laura Dowridge-Phillips, Editor of the Guardian Media Limited in Trinidad; Philippa Morish, President of Etiquette International, a Guyanese living in New York City and Donn Thompson, an international photographer, who has done shoots for magazines such as GQ, Interview, The Journal and many others.
Others include Kirk Cambridge-Delpeshe, Beauty Editor and former contributor to numerous magazines; Steven Seedo, contributor to De Ware Tijd in Suriname and Richard Young, one of the most celebrated and recognised creative directors in the Caribbean.
They are joined by a public relations and marketing team of Ronnie Morris of Barbados Music Awards and John Quelch and Sade Richardson, both of Sonia Noel’s Designs.
The first release of ‘Making Style’ is scheduled for January 2013, with free regional distribution and circulation. Noel said their plan is to ensure wide coverage of every aspect of folk, scenic beauty and culture.
