I wish to bring to the attention of the reading public an incident which took place at Vigilance/Strathspey Vishnu Mandir on October 7, 2012 between I and the presiding priest.
I am a former president of the mandir before I migrated in the 1990s. Over the years, every time I returned to Guyana I would visit the temple to make donations and other forms of contribution.
On October 7, 2012, I visited the temple to perform my usual devotional service (I am on vacation in Guyana). I also took the opportunity to enquire from the priest the state of affairs of the temple, with a view to assist it financially, (the temple is in a state of reconstruction). As if I was not welcomed, the priest openly shouted at me in the presence of the audience, saying ‘you are a thief’ and that “I am the president and there’s nothing you can do.”
Mr. Editor, as an elderly citizen and a member of that temple for over 30 years, I felt very embarrassed and shameful at those derogatory remarks made by such an individual who is supposed to be the spiritual leader of the temple and the community.
Mr. Editor, I am also appealing to all Guyana to denounce such behaviour as practised by that priest, as others are also affected at the temple and within the community to the extent that some persons are denied access to the temple.
