DIRECTOR of Sport within the National Sports Commission (NSC) Neil Kumar yesterday told Chronicle Sport, he is confident that Guyana’s male and female table tennis and basketball teams will churn out creditable performances at the second leg of the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) in neighbouring Suriname this weekend.
However, while Kumar took the time to single out Levi Nedd as a hard-working volleyball coach, he believes that much more needs to be done in the coaching department of the sport, if Guyana should get past Suriname and French Guiana in future encounters at the IGG level. “First of all, I must say thanks to our Local Organising Committee, who worked extremely hard to ensure the Surinamese had a wonderful stay here, while the games were well-organised for the first leg over the last weekend,” said Kumar.
He added, “Having said that, I think our cyclists performed well, winning both the time trial and road races in both categories, while our chess players performed creditably also. But much more needs to be done with our volleyball, especially in the coaching department, if we are to get past both Suriname and French Guiana, especially at the IGG level.
“I think Levi Nedd is doing a fantastic job and I have lots of confidence in him. He did his best with the team, but we still need to buckle down with regard to the aspect of volleyball coaching and we will be looking at the possibility of having a few coaches come in and work with the Guyana Volleyball Federation, in this regard.”
Looking ahead to this weekend’s second leg in Suriname, Kumar said Chris Bowman did an excellent job with the basketball team, whose players were selected from the National Schools programme.
“I am very confident that both of our teams who will be competing against the Surinamese in basketball and table tennis, will make us proud.”
“The basketballers, both male and female were given adequate preparation by Mr Bowman, who did a good job with the players, while the table tennis teams were chosen from the just concluded Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA)-organised, Digicel-sponsored Inter-Secondary Schools Championships.
These teams will be going to Suriname tomorrow morning (today) to give of their best for Guyana and I know that when the dust is settled on the competition Saturday night, Guyana would be victorious in both disciplines,” said Kumar.
The Guyanese contingent left these shores at 04:00hrs this morning for Suriname, where they will engage their hosts at basketball and table tennis in both the male and female categories, before returning home sometime on Sunday.
