Linden COI to conclude outstanding matters next January

THE Linden Commission of Inquiry (COI) Commissioners will in January conclude outstanding matters, principally addressing compensation claims by those affected during the protest that resulted in the death of three men. Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon gave the update yesterday at his weekly post-Cabinet media briefing, in Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown.
He said the final report of the commissioners would, subsequently, be compiled and its submission is scheduled for February 2013, on an agreement reached, between President Donald Ramotar and the Commission, for an extension of the previously set January 2013 timeframe.
According to Luncheon, Cabinet has also agreed to meet, shortly, with a Region 10 (Upper Demeraa/Berbice) delegation, in the wake of the stalled works at the level of the two technical teams,  both of which were appointed by Government.
Luncheon said he is aware of the adverse comments being made about the likely outcome of the Commission but he believes it would be definitive enough to stand up to questioning on accuracy, legitimacy and the like.
He observed that the inquiry has, so far, dealt condignly with many of those who made outrageous statements, idle remarks and claims that barely reflected reality.

Utterances
“I would want to urge the media to view these late utterances…from the same perspective,” Luncheon said.
The long-awaited inquiry into the last July 18 shooting at the Mackenzie Bridge in Linden, where three persons lost their lives in protest over proposed electricity tariff hikes, commenced last September in the Law Library building of the High Court before Commission Chairman Lensley Wolfe and Commissioners Dana Seetahal, K.D. Knight, Cecil Kennard and Claudette Singh.
Also involved in the proceedings were Secretary to the Commission Ronald Burch-Smith, Attorneys-at-law Ganesh Hira and Euclin Gomes and Administrator to the Commission Hugh Denbow.
Other attorneys–at-law Nigel Hughes appeared for relatives of the three deceased persons; Hukumchand and Peter Hugh for the Guyana Police Force (GPF); Mohammed Khan and Dawn Holder-Alert for the Guyana Bar Association (GBA);Basil Williams, Joseph Harmon and James Bond for A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
