IT was a day of upsets and surprises for several Super League frontrunners as the underdogs stomped their authority on Sunday when the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) event continued with five matches across the country. Uitvlugt Warriors pulled off a stunning 2-1 upset over the country’s top team Alpha United at the Uitvlugt ground while Buxton United needled Pele to claim a well-earned three points. The BK International team that has been quite outspoken played to a 2-2 draw with Den Amstel prior to the Alpha defeat.
Also at the Buxton ground was the BV-Triumph/Milerock match which BV won 2-1 while Rosignol United and Amelia’s Ward battled to a 2-2 draw at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.
At the Buxton ground, the East Demerara fans enjoyed a treat as BV-Triumph went ahead with a goal from the veteran Shawn Daniels in the 38th minute then Ron Hopkinson extended the lead in the 74th minute.
With time running out quickly, the opposition managed to pull one back in the 83rd minute from the boot of Beneakaman Smartt but the clearly drained Milerock team had nothing more in the tank.
In the other showdown, Pele and the Buxtonians were trading shots but the U-18 goalkeepers put forth outstanding performances between the uprights. Colwin Barnwell scored the decider in the 84th minute from a clinical drive in the goal area.
At Uitvlugt, Den Amstel Pork Knockers and BK Western Tigers played to an entertaining draw with Gideon Payne (28th) and Andra Hector (41st) scoring for the home side while Gavin Wilson (48th) and Leon Yaw (88th) scored for BK Western Tigers.
In the second game, which can be considered as the biggest upset in the history of the Super League, Uitvlugt Warriors defeated Alpha United. It began with a defence error in the 38th minute that resulted in the first goal but Anthony Abrams equalised for Alpha United in the 43rd minute. The match winner was scored by Delon Lanferman in the 79th minute.
Rosignol United’s goalscorer against Amelia’s Ward was the talented Olvis Mitchell while Carlos Grant scored for the Linden side in the 41st minute and his teammate Oswald Benjamin scored in the 58th minute.
The action continues on Sunday November 11 at the Uitvlugt ground with Uitvlugt Warriors against Milerock at 13:30hrs and at the BV ground, Buxton United and Rosignol United meet at 13:30hrs then BV/Triumph will host Alpha United.
