Corruption charges levelled against Superintendent Ramnarine

POLICE Superintendent David Ramnarine may find himself between a rock and a hard place after two miners on Monday alleged that he was involved in corrupt practices and bribery. The miners gave their names as businessmen Partebo Rosso and Michael Rodrigues and are involved in the business of gold mining. They claimed that Ramnarine as E&F Commander demanded millions of dollars in bribes altogether over a specified period of time and though they had reported the matter to the late Police Commissioner Henry Greene, “no action was taken to date.”

“This gentleman extorted from me alone over six million, abusing his privilege with concocted stories forcing me into paying bribes to avoid the lockups. He is a clever man and knows how to demand bribes from people”, Rosso related to the Guyana Chronicle.

He said that he had shared information with Greene on several occasions before his demise, but no investigation was formally launched into his allegations against Ramnarine.

Rodrigues, on the other hand, said his money was used to establish a home business for Ramnarine and finds it improper that policemen at his level could get away with such crimes. He noted that the Police Superintendent was the subject of much media limelight after he was allegedly caught distorting the facts surrounding another matter.

A few months ago rumours circulated that Ramnarine’s foray into the media with allegations of misappropriation of $90 million dollars allocated to the police for elections 2011, was a smokescreen to distract the public from what was an internal investigation against several extortion and bribery charges against him.

Ramnarine’s claim that his division did not receive any of the 90 million turned out to be false since a copy of a cheque was produced showing he had signed for monies allocated to his division.

Recently, an audit by the Auditor General office revealed that the 90 million was properly accounted for by the police.

The miners are upset about the lack of movement on their complaints as  they find it ironic that Ramnarine could have attention brought to his allegations against other persons while those against him lingers in the dark.
