IN the United States of America, Airlines, on Sunday suspended more than 5,000 flights, and Amtrak suspended its train service across the Northeast as well, as tens of millions of people, remained locked in preparations for Hurricane Sandy, dubbed ‘a rare hybrid storm’.
Schools and other institutions and services are being closed as well, as disaster preparedness heightens, for the storm which threatens to bring life-threatening surge and menace 50 million people in the most heavily populated corridor in the U.S.
MSN news report yesterday said forecasters have warned that New York could be in particular peril. On Sunday evening, New York and Philadelphia moved to shut down their subways, buses and trains, and announced that schools would be closed on Monday as well.
Meanwhile, Caribbean Airlines on Sunday announced that it has cancelled flights in and out New York’s JFK International Airport for Sunday and Monday as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
On its web site, the Airline said: “Caribbean Airlines wishes to advise the public that due to adverse weather conditions affecting the JFK International Airport due to Hurricane Sandy, flight cancellations into and out of JFK for the 28th and the 29th of October are as follows:
