THE Guyana Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBCHA) is again partnering with Lifeline Counselling Services for their Annual Phillip Vanderhyden Walk-a-thon and is urging the public to come out and participate. The Walk-a-thon is scheduled for tomorrow and takes off from outside the Bank of Guyana at 06:00 hrs. The walk through the streets of Georgetown will culminate at the National Park. This year the walk-a-thon is being held under the theme “Getting to Zero”.
Meanwhile, in a tangible show of support towards the noble cause, GBCHA this year has contributed a total $369,620 in cash and kind to the Phillip Vanderhyden Walk-a-thon which aims to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS and to show support for persons infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
The following GBCHA member companies donated to this year’s Walk-a-thon: A.H. & L Kissoon, Bank of Nova Scotia, Banks DIH Limited, Cara Hotels, Farfan & Mendes, Guyana Gold & Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA), Guyana Lottery Company, Hand in Hand Mutual Life Insurance, Kaieteur News, National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO), Pegasus Hotel Guyana and Sterling Products Limited.
Four years into the business, and moving from strength to strength, the GBCHA continues to deliver on its mandate to work with member companies and other partners in the national response to HIV/AIDS and to reduce stigma and discrimination in the workplaces. To this end, the Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) site at the GBCHA continues to serve employees of member companies and the community.
Persons are invited to visit the GBCHA site or any other VCT site during the week of November 19 to 23, 2012 as the GBCHA continues to mobilize for National Week of Testing. All persons are urged to go out and get tested, in order to know their status.
Meanwhile, the organisation continues to broaden the base of issues covered, with a view to improving health and wellness issues in its workplace programmes, and ultimately Guyana. In this regard, it is urging women to continue to get screened for breast cancer, while thanking all member companies who turned out to show their support last Saturday October 20 at the Seventh Annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.
Additionally, the GBCHA Secretariat will be embarking on a Gender Based Violence (GBV) project that would seek to widen the skills of new and existing peer educators to address the issues related to Gender Based Violence in the workplace and beyond. This project, from which employees of member companies and their families will stand to benefit significantly, is being supported through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Finally, the GBCHA has assured that it will continue to mobilize and assist the private sector in their response to GBV, HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases in the workplace and beyond. This will be done through facilitating technical assistance as well as helping organizations apply their core competencies, products, services and resources to the national response to health and wellness issues in Guyana.
