GEORGETOWN Cricket Club Spartans recorded a stunning victory over Hikers Innovation in the opening game of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T)-sponsored Guyana Hockey Board’s Indoor Hockey Championship which got under way on Wednesday at the National Gymnasium. The Ladies’ showdown saw Spartans cruise to a 6–1 victory over their rivals with an all-round effort from the side.
They went ahead as early as the second minute when Alysa Xavier scored a penalty corner but Tonnica Archer equalised soon after with an eighth-minute field goal. The first half ended with the teams still deadlocked but at the commencement of the second half it became a whole different ball game.
Ashley DeGroot scored in the 21st minute to put the eventual victors ahead once again then a goal each from Dacia Woodroffe (28th), Samantha Fernandes (29th), Athena Seenanon (34th) and Sandy Ramnarine (37th) sealed the deal.
Following that showdown, two first division and two second division matches were contested; Old Fort defeated Hikers 2–1 and GCC played to a 2–2 draw with Hikers while in the second division matches Hikers trounced Saints 5–1 and GCC sank Old Fort 6-3.
Dwight Sullivan and Askofu scored in the seventh and 14th minutes for Old Fort while Azad DeAbreau was the lone scorer for Hikers. He scored in the 24th minute.
Goals from DeAbreau (10th) and Colonel Heywood (12th) for Hikers and goals from Eric Hing (6th) and Dwayne Scott (28th) for GCC led to the teams to a deadlock at regulation time.
In the second division category, a goal each from Medroy Scotland (2nd), Kareem McKenzie (7th), Peter DeGroot (12th), Andrew Shaw (17th), Raphael DeGroot (33rd) and Leonard George (39th) was more than enough to overpower the Old Fort team that only managed three goals.
Scoring for Old Fort were Aderemi Simon (10th), Omar Hopkinson (22nd) and Steffan Sprostra (25th).
The other second division match saw Jason Hoyte and Osafo Tinnerman both score for Hikers in the 11th minute then Aroydy Branford and Colonel Branford scored in the 17th and 18th minutes respectively. Hikers’ other goal was scored by Rayon Branford in the 27th minute, while Laures Stewart secured Saints’ lone goal in the 20th minute.
The competition continued last night with Old Fort versus Saints and Hikers versus GCC in the second division category; GCC versus Old Fort in the Veterans’ category; Divas versus Tigers in the Ladies’ category and Old Fort versus GCC in the first division category.
