UNIPARTS Auto Spares became the latest addition to the family of chess sponsors when the entity officially launched the Uniparts Senior Chess Championship 2012 Qualifiers, which is scheduled to get under way this Saturday at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club. The sponsorship cheque for the tournament was handed over at the store’s Sheriff Street location by Assistant Manager Ian Doodnat to president of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Shiv Nandalall. Close to $50 000 in cash prizes, medals and a trophy are up for grabs.
This will give players an opportunity to qualify for the 2012 National Senior Championship, and challenge reigning senior champion Taffin Khan for the title.
The tournament consists of seven rounds and comes on the heels of the just concluded 2012 junior championship. Each player would be allotted 90 minutes per game and the recording of moves would be compulsory.
The top seven players from the tournament will move forward to participate in the 2012 National Senior Chess Championship scheduled for mid-November.
Registration begins at 15:30hrs and play starts one hour later. Registration fee is set at $800 for senior non-members of the GCF, while members would pay a reduced fee.
