HPS announces… : Cabinet approves awards for 35 more core homes

CABINET, on Tuesday, approved the awarding of two contracts for the construction of 35 more core houses which will see needy persons owning their own, with just a contribution of $100,000. Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon, making the disclosure yesterday, reported that the buildings will be constructed in two West Bank Demerara villages, Belle West being one of them.
Speaking at his usual post-Cabinet media briefing, in Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown, he said the award would be to the tune of $63.35M.
The ‘Core’ homes initiative is one by the Ministry of Housing and Water and the costs will, essentially, be borne by Central Government.
Previous contracts awarded were for the erection of others at Westminster, also on West Bank Demerara and at Lusignan and Non- Pariel on East Coast Demerara.
The Westminster contract was for $15.6M; Lusignan $14.6M and Non- Pariel $15.9M.
The beneficiaries will be persons of “absolute poverty”, Luncheon had said at a previous press conference, maintaining: “You have to be indigent to benefit from Core Homes.”
He explained that the individual recipient would make a donation of $100,000 and then provision of the land, construction of the home and every other requirement would be done by the government.
Luncheon, also Cabinet Secretary, said about 1,000 core homes will be built and awards for some have already been made in Regions 5 (Mahaica/Berbice) and 6 (East Berbice/Corentyne).
According to him, the investment for the land on the 1,000 lots, preparation, including roads, potable water, electricity and drainage, is about half of a billion dollars.
