YOUNG Simon Purees, attached to the Albouystown-based Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) boxing gym, were recently the recipients of a school bag each, containing school accessories, among other items, thanks to two overseas-based Guyanese. Head of Briso Promotions, Seon Bristol, and former amateur boxer Ron Roberts, presented head coach of FYF, Siebert Blake, with 11 school bags along with four heavy bag cases and mouth protectors for the young boxers.
According to Blake, Roberts said it was a pleasure giving back to the youths of Guyana, whom he charged to take advantage of the education that is being offered to them at the moment and urged them to remain focused.
Blake said Bristol, along with John Douglas and Bruce, the manager of the Gleason’s Gym, also made a donation of mouth protectors and hand wraps to the FYF.
On the local scene, reigning World Boxing Council/Caribbean Boxing Federation (WBC/CABOIFE) welterweight champions Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy who is seen as an inspiration to many of the gym’s young pugilists, also made a tangible donation to a few boxers.
Blake said Hardy’s gesture was not the first of its kind, as from the time he won his first professional fight to his last recent victory over Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, the 25-year-old has been making contributions to young boxers in the gym.
As recent as last week when the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association held its Pepsi/Gatorade Under-16 Championship in Berbice, Hardy made a presentation to a few young boxers, while Blake himself expressed heartfelt thanks to Roberts, Bristol and Hardy for the contribution they have made to the gym.
