TWELVE years ago, telecommunications giant, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) joined forces with the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) to sponsor its National Indoor Hockey Championships. At a simple presentation ceremony held last Tuesday, GT&T’s Public Relations Officer Allison Parker handed over her Company’s contribution to the GHB, adding continued support for the national indoor tournament remains strong, due to the discipline and positive performance of GHB and its players.
Parker urged fans to come out and support the games throughout the tournament, but not before expressing on behalf of the Company how exciting it is for them to be a part of contributing towards the further development of the sport.
The tournament is the premier local indoor competition on the calendar of the GHB, as the champion teams for the year will derive benefits from the tournament which caters for four categories of players, namely men’s first and second divisions, ladies’ and veterans divisions.
For the first time this year the tournament will be staged on the new surface installed at the National Gymnasium which has proved to be a far superior surface for indoor hockey than any in the past.
In 2000 when GT&T began their sponsorship of this event, there were only two divisions, but the tournament has grown significantly into one of the most important and exciting hockey events of the year.
Top clubs such as Hikers, Old Fort and the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), will feature teams in each competition while newcomers Saints will try to make a name for themselves in the men’s second division category.
The men’s first division will see the traditional star-studded field of senior players including Aderemi Simon of Old Fort, Dwayne Scott of GCC and Shane Samuels of the Hikers infused with a blend of upcoming stars like Aroydy Branford and Leroy Jack, just to name a few.
The ladies’ division is sure to provide a high brand of competition as many of the players in the current national team are in training and will be on show. Captain Sonia Jardine, along with exciting striker Gabriella Xavier, will lead the GCC attack against Hikers’ stalwarts Maria Munroe and Cora Towler.
The competition which bullied off last night, runs every evening until Sunday and vice-president of the GHB Rawl Davson, who was on hand to receive the cheque, expressed great pleasure and appreciation working with GT&T for so many years, referring to them as an important partner with the GHB.
