FIRE of unknown origin yesterday consumed a two-flat wooden house at Lot 1 Da Silva Street, Newtown, Kitty, Georgetown, in the process displacing Reshonah Evans, her two children, and stall holder Hansranie Ramsaroop and her husband, who occupied the lower flat of the building.
The fire ravaged the edifice at about 12:31hrs on Friday morning and sometime after a distress call was placed to the Guyana Fire Service, which responded with several fire tenders that
doused the flames and contained disaster to one building.
However, the dwelling house next door was slightly scorched.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has revealed that for the year so far, 87 buildings have been destroyed by fire, while 23 others have thereby been severely damaged. Ten lives have been lost, comprising five children and five adults; while 227 persons have consequently been left homeless.
The main causes of most of these fires stem from unsafe practices such as, carelessness, leaving children unattended, theft, and unsafe use of electricity; as well as malicious use of fire to create destruction of properties.
