MINISTER of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, has deemed as unequivocal absurdity allegations by the blog site that goes by the name ‘One Voice can Win’, noting that his character can withstand scrutiny.
Following the execution of Ricardo Rodrigues, Minister Ramsammy called for fairness when pointing fingers. The site sought to link the minister to a known drug dealer, and even published his photograph.
“I’m only asking for fairness. I could have passed Ricardo Rodrigues 50 times on the road and still would not know the individual, but now my picture is being flashed next to his,” he said.
The minister said he will at no time stand silently while his character is being besmirched, maintaining that it can withstand any amount of scrutiny.
“Why are they hiding behind the One Voice can Win, let them be man enough to come out and say it publicly…I am saying that the Nigel Hughes, Nagamootoos and Williams are guilty of the violence in Agricola, because I have a face. Let them do the same,” he said.
According to the minister, the Opposition are the ones who instigated protests in Linden and Agricola, and then abandoned the protestors when they became uncontrollable, then publicly say it was the PPP/C that organised the protest.
The minister maintained that the violence in the two areas was not precipitated by government, despite their voicing their concerns for a relative reason. Disappointment was also raised with regard to the private media’s disinterest with protestors who injured officers.
“The Opposition cannot at any time disassociate themselves from the violence…while I am dismissing the allegations, I say publicly that the people who are spreading these rumours are in fact the perpetrators,” he said.
Commenting on the issue which has seen Opposition members calling for the resignation of the Home Affairs Minister, Minister Ramsammy stated that he stands behind the minister and his innocence.
He stated that while it is clear that the Opposition were the ones who orchestrated the protest in Linden and Agricola, the government did not use the occasion for political mileage by calling for their resignation.
“If Rohee didn’t call them after the shooting, they would have been the ones to say he didn’t care…if you want to call for his resignation, why not call for the resignation of everyone who was in charge at the moment,” he said.
The minister pointed out that every time Guyana is poised to take off; it is the Opposition members who concoct such allegations, with the aim of destabilizing the government.
He also called on Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes to give an explanation as to the whereabouts of the tape taken from a gas station in 2007.
“A gas station owner was killed. Minutes after they were there, and what I want to know is what were they doing there at that time? Nigel Hughes and others must explain where the tape is. At the time their explanation is that they took it for safe-keeping, so now what?” he queried.
